Authorities in South Carolina said that a man fleeing a roadside checkpoint had let his daughter die in a burning car.

According to news agencies, Imhotep Osiris Norman, 26, was accused of homicide for abusing children. South Carolina's road patrol said soldiers had tried to stop him for speeding on Friday.

Captain Kelley Hughes stated that the pursuing soldiers had noticed that Norman's car was smoking and producing sparks. Authorities say that a bag was thrown from the moving car; they say that later tested positive for illegal drugs.

The car then caught fire and Norman escaped on foot when he stopped. The investigators then found Xena Rah's body, Lah Norman, aged one year, in the back seat of the car.

Norman was arrested later. He says that he did not know that the car was on fire.
