Dodgers Throwback Uniforms, each out of 42 for Jackie Robinson Day 2019

Today, Jackie Robinson Day takes place in Major League Baseball, an annual celebration of the anniversary of Jackie Robinson 's victory over color during his debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947.

Since the 2009 season, every player, coach and coach in the league wears Robinson's number 42 shirt without his name on April 15 (or on the 16th if his team is not scheduled to play). The number 42 was retired on April 15, 1997, the 50th anniversary of his debut. To date, Robinson is the only player to have received this honor in the Major League Baseball.

This season, as was the case in 2018, all players will also wear a special badge No. 42 on their shirt sleeves and on the right side of their caps. The patch features 42 Dodgers style characters, on a cream circle adorned with gold on a blue diamond. Two bats crossed behind the diamond.

Players will also have the opportunity to wear special socks designed for the day. These socks are very similar to those of 2018, mainly black and gray with the Jackie Robinson Day logo on some fine blue and white stripes. The Jackie Robinson Day logo has been re-colored on the socks in 2019, and an extra strip of gray has been added to the top:

The Los Angeles Dodgers, the franchise with which Robinson has played his entire career, will go even further this year by wearing the 1947 style Brooklyn Dodgers white uniform.

Although the uniform is largely identical to that of today's Dodgers, there are some notable differences.

The first is obviously the cap that will feature the Brooklyn B rather than the LA "nested" Los Angeles.

On the jersey, police numbers players at the back of the uniform is significantly thicker than in 1947. A comparison of Jackie Robinson Day jerseys worn by the Dodgers in 2018 and that They will wear tonight show the difference:

In the photo above, the Dodgers Roll Up Sleeve Jersey will feature an older jersey cut at the shoulders and arms. Note the location of the seams here from the back collar and down the sleeves, back to 2019 right and what the Dodgers wore for Jackie Robinson Day 2018 left.

The wordmark "Dodgers" on the front of the shirt is also different, but it is much less noticeable. You can see it in the spacing between some letters, I can really catch it between the "r" and the "s".

The logo "LA", usually worn on the sleeve of the Dodgers' jersey, will not be present for tonight's match. The number on the front of the jersey (which was not worn by the Dodgers in 1947) will still be there, but I imagine it is reserved to help introduce everyone with the number 42.

Returning to the 1947 design is an excellent decision by the Dodgers. I hope they will do it for all future games Jackie Robinson Day.

Finally, some players will be celebrating Jackie with their own additions to their uniforms, such as Curtis Granderson of Miami, who is wearing these cleated shoes with a new logo commemorating the 100th anniversary of Robinson's birth:

As mentioned earlier, a few teams that are not scheduled for the day will celebrate Jackie Robinson Day on April 16th, and some will celebrate it on the 15th and 16th.

Baltimore is in Boston this morning for the annual Patriot Day game where they also celebrate Jackie Robinson Day; then, they will go tomorrow to St. Petersburg, where they will once again wear 42 while the Rays (who are now on leave) are celebrating.
