Donald Trump has his first Republican challenger for 2020.
William Weld, the former Massachusetts governor, said on Friday that he would run against Trump for the GOP presidential nomination.
"We have a president whose priorities are biased towards his promotion rather than the good of the country," Weld said at a recent meeting in New Hampshire. "He may have great energy and considerable raw talent, but he does not use it in ways that promote democracy, truth, justice, and equal opportunity for all. To make matters worse, our president is just too unstable to assume the duties of the country's highest executive office. "
On Monday, he made it official.
In 2016, Weld co-signed with Gary Johnson on Libertarian's presidential candidate list and received 4.5 million votes.
Trump, who remains very popular with much of his base, becomes the first GOP holder since George H. W. Bush must receive a first challenge.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Weld was asked if he was surprised that he was the first Republican to oppose Trump.
"I'm very surprised I'm the only one," said Weld. "The Republican Party has many competent officials and I bet a few dozen of them think, like me, that they could do a better job than the outgoing president. But it's partly a miasma of fear that I've seen before in Washington, DC and partly whistle in front of the cemetery and say, "I'm happy, happy, happy. no clothes. And this emperor does not have clothes!
Weld describes himself as fiscally conservative and socially liberal, but wishes to point out that his positions were much more consistent than those of the current president.
"Mr. Trump, and this is not an indictment, has been a democrat of New York City most of his life," Weld told Rolling Stone. "My principles have never changed I'm the same guy who said in 1992 at the Republican convention, "I want the government to come out of your wallet and your bedroom."
