Cale Makar had a busy few days. On Friday, he was named the Hobey Baker Award for Best Academic Player. On Saturday, he and UMass played and lost the NCAA Championship game. On Sunday, he signed an entry-level contract with Avalanche, which had written him fourth overall in 2017.
Monday:
Makar became the seventh player in history – and the first defenseman – to score in his NHL playoff debut. He did it at his very first stroke. They will not all be so easy, but there will be many more.
Makar's count proved to be the winner of Colorado's 6: 2 victory over the Flames and a 2-1 win in the series. And maybe the 20-year-old was not only boasting, the day before, he had sworn that the speed of the NHL would not require a period of adjustment because "NCAA hockey is pretty fast in itself. After the third match, AV coach Jared Bednar has vouched for Makar's ability to follow. "He was good, from the beginning he was involved, he looked calm, cool, collected."
Makar's parents, Gary and Laura, were fewer.
"It's a totally surreal moment, a pinch in the heart, all in one. It's crazy, "said Gary Makar. "I could not be more excited."
There is a small problem though. The Makars come from Calgary and Cale grew up taking root for the Flames. At least he's had a few years since he was selected to adapt to the idea of being an Av, although he never expects his debut to take place against his favorite team forever. "It's a strange feeling to meet the team you loved, but my allegiance is now on the Colorado Avalanche," Cale said, joking that his parents were "fully converted, now" .
The same thing may not be true for the whole family yet. "We have a lot of Flames fans in our family and we probably have everything they make, in terms of merchandise," said Gary Makar.
