Razer unveils the new Core X Chroma, its latest external graphics box (eGPU), which allows you to increase the graphics power of your Windows or macOS laptop using the included Thunderbolt 3 cable. Core X Chroma improves on last year's Core X by providing customizable Chroma backlighting, a more powerful 700-watt power supply, and USB-A and Gigabit Ethernet ports.
At the back, you'll immediately notice the four USB Type-A ports, which can be used to power and use desktop accessories with your laptop or to charge your other devices. Core X's Thunderbolt 3 main cable also charges USB-C laptops up to 100 watts. It is located just under the Gigabit Ethernet port, which you can use for faster downloads than you will get over Wi-Fi. For those who keep the score, Ethernet support is a recurring feature of the company's first eGPU , the Core V2, launched in 2016.
Core X Chroma supports a broad range of PCIe graphics cards, including Nvidia's RTX, GTX, and Quadro series, as well as AMD's Radeon and Radeon Pro GPUs for Windows PCs. Unfortunately, Macs connected to the Core X Chroma will only support AMD GPUs because of the inherent limitations of macOS, which is a little disappointing.
On paper, it seems that Razer designed the Core X Chroma so that it is easily usable (without tools) and usable by both players and non-gamers, since only one sliding handle exposes the GPU to inside. In the coming weeks, we'll be looking at the Core X Chroma to see if it works properly with a wide range of Windows and MacBook laptops when it's connected to Radeon or RTX graphics cards (or just Radeon, in the case MacBook).
The new Razer Core X Chroma will be available from April 16 from Razer.com and select retailers in the United States and Canada. It will be "available soon" in the UK, France, Germany, the Nordic countries, China, Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan.
