According to court documents obtained by CNN, Jolie and Pitt were granted a dissolution under the sole status of their marriage.

The court documents filed at the time showed that the couple had separated on September 15, 2016, two years and one month after her marriage in August 2014, as a result of a relationship of almost ten years and six children.

Since then, the ex-spouses have been fighting for the care of their children, Maddox, 16, Pax, 15, Zahara, 14, Shiloh, 12, and twins Knox and Vivvienne, 10.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt to be tried in custody case
Jolie asked for sole custody, while Pitt was seeking joint custody.

Atlanta-based divorce lawyer Randy Kessler told CNN that the court's decision allowed Jolie and Pitt to stop marrying, while continuing to solve problems such as custody.

"California is one of the unique states that allows parties to get a divorce without solving any other problems," Kessler said. "Georgia and most other states demand that the parties resolve everything – custody, alimony, division of property – before granting them a divorce, as this encourages people to complete the negotiations to obtain a divorce."

Kessler, who has represented several clients in high-profile celebrity divorce cases, said it's not surprising that the case of Jolie and Pitt is still going on.

"When the problems of children are at stake, it is better to do things right than to hurry to get out," he said. "It looks like the court is trying to protect the kids."

As part of the filing, Jolie's last name was also legally restored to that of her married name of Pitt.

CNN asked Jolie for comments.

A Pitt representative did not comment on the case when CNN made contact.
