In the history of the NHL, 190 teams lost three games on the playoffs. Four of these teams rallied to win the series.
To quote Jim Carrey: "So you tell me that there is a chance."
Since the Penguins are faced, here are the four returns:
1942 – Toronto beats Detroit in the Stanley Cup final.
It was the first time that a team was coming back from a three-game deficit and remains the only time that this happens in the Stanley Cup finals.
The Red Wings not only won the first three games of the series, but led the match 4 2-0, then 3-2 in the third period before the Maple Leafs won 4-3 OT. The Leafs then turned the tables decisively, winning the 9-3, 3-0 and 3-1 wins to win the Stanley Cup.
Sweeney Schriner led the Leafs (and series) with five goals, including two in Game 7. Syl Apps (father of the future Penguin Syl Jr.) had seven points for Toronto. Apps 7 Post-Game Quote: "By Jiminy!" Toronto defenseman Bob Goldham has awarded a lucky charm for hairpin and chicken.
Seventh match attendance also contributed to the match's history: 16,218 people showed up at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, a record for a hockey crowd in Canada.
Detroit coach Jack Adams has not participated in the last three games of the series. He was suspended for hiring referee Mel Harwood in a fight at the end of the fourth game. The award for best NHL coach has been named in his honor.
1975 – The New York Islanders beat the Penguins in the quarterfinals.
The Islanders' turnaround was triggered when coach Al Arbor put goaltender Billy Smith on the bench after losing the first three games. Smith won four Stanley Cups from 1980 to 1983 as the No. 1 goalie for the Islanders. But Glenn "Chico" Resch won the next four matches, allowing only four goals and a .969 record save percentage.
The first six games in the series averaged more than six goals per game. But the seventh game at the Pittsburgh Civic Arena gave only one goal, a defeat by Islanders captain Ed Westfall, with a time remaining at 5:18.
Westfall's four goals were a top for the Islanders. Bob "Battleship" Kelly and Lowell MacDonald each scored four goals for Pittsburgh. The Apps family was on the wrong end of this comeback, although Syl Jr. scored one goal and two assists. Pierre Larouche scored one goal and four assists and scored the score in Game 7.
Apps and Jean Pronovost broke Resch's mask in the first period. Resch said: "The two best stops I've made have been with my head."
The Islanders then lost to the eventual Philadelphia champion in the semifinal, forcing a match 7 after losing three times behind zero.
2010 – Philadelphia beat Boston in the quarter-finals.
Three-nothing was not a nice margin for the Bruins. Not only did they lead the series, three games against zero, they led the seventh match by a score of 3-0.
But the Flyers did not surrender, winning the decisive 4-3 match against Simon Gagne's goal in the third period. The winner of the Won Series came with Boston playing shorthanded because of a penalty from too many men – a bugaboo all too familiar in the Bruins' playoff legends.
Gagne also scored in OT to win game four with the Bruins on the verge of completing a sweep of the series. He missed the first three games with a broken foot.

Daniel Briere led the Flyers with five goals, tied with Milan Lucic of Boston. Substitute goalkeeper Michael Leighton won the Flyers' last two games as he replaced starter Brian Boucher, who was injured in Game 5.
The Flyers reached the Stanley Cup final before losing to Chicago in seven games.
2014 – Los Angeles defeats San Jose in a first-round series.
San Jose humiliated the Kings at the start of the series, beating them 6-3, 7-2 before taking a 4-3 win in OT in Game 3. But the Kings held up well in the remaining matches, never winning by less than three and taking Game 7 by a 5-1 count.
Goalkeeper Jonathan Quick made the difference, allowing two goals in the last three games. The Anze Kopitar Center scored four goals and six assists, while the reliable playoff player, Justin Williams, also scored four times.
"Fortunately for us, our game started on time so it's not too late," Williams said. "Four ranks, we'll make a note for not doing that again."
Logan Couture, of San Jose, said, "Every year you lose enough, but this is a kind of heartbreaking series that hurts, it will be a long summer of thinking about this one and what we let slip. "
The Kings then won the next two games in seven games before beating the New York Rangers in five games to win the Stanley Cup final.
