The Apple vs. Qualcomm Jury includes a retired MLB pitcher and a woman who has never owned a smartphone

Apple's highly-touted lawsuit against chip maker Qualcomm kicked off Monday at the San Diego Federal Court with jury selection.

Among the nine jurors selected were a former Kansas City Royals Major League Baseball pitcher, a woman who had never owned a smartphone, a retired clinical psychologist, a pilot, an accountant, a nurse, retirement and an environmental consultant, according to information from CNET and Bloomberg.

Opening statements will be heard today. Apple has accused Qualcomm of anti-competitive business practices by demanding excessive patent royalties, while Qualcomm alleges that Apple manufacturers Foxconn, Pegatron, Wistron and Compal owe it more than $ 7.5 billion in unpaid royalties.

Apple has already won a preliminary ruling ordering Qualcomm to pay close to $ 1 billion in rebates last month.

Qualcomm has already been the subject of close scrutiny by antitrust regulators from several countries, including the United States, where an FTC lawyer said: "It is overwhelming to prove that Qualcomm has engaged in exclusionary behavior and that the actions of this behavior combined are anti-competitive ".

In the middle of the legal battle, Apple abandoned Qualcomm as a provider of cellular modems from the iPhone XS of last year, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR, switching to Intel for all modems of these devices.
