Manchester United saw hopes of a disappointing European comeback in the first half against Barcelona.

Lionel Messi scored a brace to extend his lead to 3-0 overall and let the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer players in search of a Champions League exit.

David De Gea gave Messi his second goal as he scored a long-range effort in his own net – but the Argentinian also had a hand for his first goal.

He dispossessed Ashley Young before sinking into a superb shot, while United's fans were furious against the experienced back.

His costly mistake came less than a week after his disappointing first-leg performance at Old Trafford – and United fans are confident that the 33-year-old's best days are well behind him.

Young was deposed by Lionel Messi for his first goal

He had a lot of trouble with his supporters who asked him to hang up, but some even urged him to resign at halftime after the shock suffered by Nou Camp.

The fans also drew a parallel with club legend Gary Neville, who acknowledged his decline before retiring. A fan said, "Gary Neville knew when to retire, stop hurting Man United by continuing to play."

Many supporters have asked Young to "please retire at half-time" with the popular young Diogo Dalot waiting on the bench.

Young also struggled in the first leg at Old Trafford

"Ashley Young should just be serving everyone and retiring," he said, while he was considered an "absolute embarrassment".

Another fan added, "Young's last games were worse than the Stoke game that convinced Gary Neville to retire."

It seems, however, that United fans will probably not have their wish soon.

The English international was to be out of season but signed a new one – year contract in February to keep him at Old Trafford.
