Andrea Norton, 20, was part of a group of Briar Cliff University students who traveled Sunday to Hawksbill Crag, in the Ozark National Forest of Arkansas, as part of of a class activity, said the Sheriff of Newton County, Glenn Wheeler.

Wheeler said 61 emergency personnel had responded and Norton had lost ground before falling to a hundred meters.
Norton was from Hot Springs, South Dakota, and was a junior at Briar Cliff in Sioux City, Iowa. The teacher who has been leading the group of students to rock has been there for more than 20 years, Wheeler said.
Norton was a triple major in biology and environmental science and had asked the school to obtain an associate degree in global studies, according to his obituary.

As part of her studies, she went to Arkansas, Costa Rica and California, and was planning a trip to the Galapagos Islands next year, said her obituary.

"Andrea has developed a true love for the planet and is dedicated to having a major impact on preservation," reads the obituary. "She has never lost her fast approach to achieving her goals."

The university has offered its condolences and praised Norton as a stellar student in a post on Facebook.

"Andrea was a passionate environmental sciences major, exemplary student, and dedicated athlete, and she put the values ​​of BCU into practice in everything from the classroom to the yard, where she was a part of. she goes, "said the university.

Norton was a member of the Briar Cliff Women's Volleyball Team, numbered 22.

Sheriff Wheeler said Norton's death was a reminder of how dangerous these popular spots like Hawksbill Crag can be.

"Hawksbill Crag is a spectacular place that thousands of people visit and enjoy every year," he said. "But just one trick or one misstep to turn a big day into a tragic day – I want everyone to enjoy our county, but be extremely careful and respect the danger these people face. I do not want other families to go through what the Andrea family is now facing.
