The park rangers want to know who has poured out thousands of glass shards on a beach at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore on Lake Michigan

Thousands of shards of glass were found scattered over hundreds of meters of coastline at the National Sleeping Bear Dunes Lake. A visitor to the park first reported the glass-covered beach stretch located near the park's Good Harbor picnic area, said Tom Ulrich, deputy park superintendent.

National Park Service rangers removed 2,500 pieces of glass from the beach during the first cleanup, he said.

"The volume of glass, fairly uniform in size, and the fact that it is not spilled in the same place as someone who throws garbage … it seems to us that it's a malicious intent, "Ulrich told CNN.

This is not the first time that glass is deposited at the park. In October 2017, large quantities of glass spilled along a beach near the parking lot of Lane Road in Port Oneida. No suspects have been identified and the incident is still under investigation. Rangers hope that this time, someone will have more information.

"It is very unfortunate that someone chooses to do such a thing and we hope to clean it up so that people can use the beach," Ulrich told CNN.

Ulrich said park employees would take time out of their usual chores and work with volunteers to continue cleaning and count the number of glass chips found. Glass containers are not allowed on the park's beaches.

The beach does not usually attract many visitors before Memorial Day, but if temperatures rise, visitors will be tempted to put on their shoes.

"I hope our visitors and the local community will be able to help identify the person or persons who would deliberately hurt our bathers, including the children," said Andy Blake, the district ranger of Leelanau.
