Hyundai Genesis Unveils Its Vision Of A Teenage Electric Luxury Car

The Genesis Mint is a small electric concept car designed to go where long and wide luxury sedans are more painful than comfortable. It is a "city-dweller" destined to sneak into the narrow lanes and dense traffic of crowded urban centers. The two-seater and two-door car has a shortened saloon car body, but without a traditional trunk.

Instead of rear seats and a classic trunk lid, the Mint has a deep shelf for loading or luggage, accessed by a set of Lamborghini style scissor doors on the side. Since access to the cargo area is by the side, there is no need to go all the way from the back to get to their luggage.

The Royal Mint is not just a fun design exercise, said Manfred Fitzgerald, Global Head of Genesis. The brand is seriously considering producing such a vehicle if its parent company, Hyundai Motor Group, approves it. It could potentially go into production around 2022, Fitzgerald said at a meeting with reporters before the unveiling.

Instead of a trunk, the Mint has a loading shelf behind the seats. The goods could also be stored at the front.

Fitzgerald said he did not see the Mint as an "entry-level" car for Genesis. Instead, it's simply an alternative product intended to be as luxurious as any other Genesis model.

"I think it will definitely be an icon for the brand," he said.

The rear loading area is accessible through side doors.

Despite its size, the Mint is not a sports car. It is really intended for urban traffic jams as opposed to large country roads. The fact that the car is electric has allowed designers to create more interior space, no room having to be fitted out for an internal combustion engine or transmission.

"I do not think you need a lot of sporting attributes for that," Fitzgerald said. "It's something that will be very pragmatic, but at the same time cool and elegant."
