NEW YORK – The Nissan GT-R is 50 years old, but Godzilla does not show his age – at least if his handmade engine has something to say about it.

The Japanese manufacturer unveiled Tuesday the Nissan GT-R 2020 at an event related to the New York Motor Show, boasting an edition commemorating its 50th anniversary and presenting the raw speed of the vehicle.

Nicknamed after the movie's fictional monster, the Nissan GT-R is what car experts call a "halo car", typically designed to generate buzz for the brand, even though most people can not afford it and that sales should not be drugged.

It's a "super sports car every day," Hiroshi Tamura, product specialist of the Nissan GT-R, told reporters at a glitzy event in Manhattan. "This GT-R brings the excitement and energy of the race track on the road."

Although the price of the 2020 model has not been released, the 2019 version has a starting price of about $ 100,000.

The GT-R, initially designed for Japanese customers as the Skyline GT-R, made its way to the United States about a decade ago and quickly drew the crowds. It has been featured in The fast and the furious movie franchise, which helped to grow his legend.

"It has become this much sought-after vehicle," said Karl Brauer, executive editor of Kelley Blue Book and Autotrader. "The nature of this car is that people will go as fast as they can between 0 and 60 years old."

The 2020 model draws 565 horsepower from its 3.8-liter dual-turbocharged, handcrafted engine.

The GT-R Track Edition, specially designed for the race, develops 600 horses.

The 50th Anniversary Edition will be offered in three special two-tone exterior colors and a special gray interior. It also features a special steering wheel, embossed seats and other interior features.

The GT-R is part of Nissan's DNA. Nissan's new North American president, José Luis Valls, said Tuesday that his job interview with the company included a GT-R drive.

Nissan also revealed Tuesday a 50th anniversary edition of the Nissan 370Z. The 2020 model two-seater coupe draws 332 horsepower from its 3.7-liter 6-cylinder engine. The price has not been published, but the 2019 model started at around $ 30,000.

The Nissan GT-R and Nissan 370-Z's 50th anniversary editions are sure to generate buzz, but the chassis and body styles of each car have not changed much. In fact, neither vehicle has been completely redesigned since 2009.
