It seems that rumors are starting to come true, at least for the Android Q beta testers. While there is no guarantee that the next version of Android will behave this way, some testers report that the system updates their Pixel phones are not available through the Settings app, but through the Google Play Store Download Manager. This, however, raises some questions about how Google plans to implement such a system.
It may be odd that Google is moving away from what is in fact a common industry practice, according to which system updates are localized and treated differently from App Store updates. A text editor, however, said that this could probably mean that Google could directly send updates to the system, bypassing OEMs and operators that often cause delays. While this may theoretically result in faster updates, it could also work against you in an ugly way.
The reason why the updates are long is long because Android providers and operators often have to first test the changes made on top of Android before deploying the update. Google has made efforts like the Project Treble and A / B Seamless updates, but it has not kept its promises of quick and regular updates. It may be a way of forcing things, but users may end up with failed systems if they are not careful.
Not to complicate matters, some reports indicate that their Pixel phones have been restarted immediately after downloading and installing these updates. It is not yet clear if this happened without warning or permission, but it can still be a mess if it is not handled properly. Of course, it is still in test phase in Android Q beta, so it is still very raw.
And then there is the potential legal problem of Google that links Android in a more complex way to its reading services. It is too early to draw a conclusion at this point, but suffice it to say that Google has aroused the interest of many Android users and, potentially, manufacturers of Android phones.
