Is my office suddenly filled with onions, or am I still scolding my eyes? The final of the season The magicians has had one of his biggest and most shocking surprises yet. You might think (or hope) that this will lead to another epic quest, such as bringing back magic in season three. But according to the spectators, this decision was intentional, resolute and permanent.

Quentin Coldwater is dead.
Let it run for a minute. Quentin is dead, Jason Ralph, the star of The magicians, will no longer be on the series, according to its creators.
Using his minor corrective power in the final episode, Quentin repaired a broken mirror so he could send the essence of the monster through the seam between the universes, sacrificing himself at the same time. What followed was a beautifully designed and incredibly powerful exploration of Quentin's after-life, which then allowed him to revisit his wonderful and complicated life and see his family say goodbye. In song, of course, because this show is determined to destroy me.
After witnessing this scene, which was a total surprise, I wondered how The magicians Minor Mend went out of this situation. Would our heroes bring him back from the dead, like what happened in Buffy against the vampires in season six, maybe travel to Hell for another epic quest? Please, tell me that they will bring Quentin back, I vainly asked for my computer screen.
But no, it's for real – and it was not done to shock, nor an end hastily written to justify an actor who wants to leave the series. In a joint statement, executive producers Will Gamble, John McNamara and Henry Alonso Myers explained how and why they and Ralph had made the collective decision to kill Quentin – the main character of Lev Grossman's novels – during the season finale .

The magicians has always been a fantastic show on real life – with a generous dose of magic so that everything feels less like a bitter medicine than an incursion into a strangely delicious pantry at 2 am, probably a little drunk. This is our approach to Season 4, knowing that we want to explore the most confusing, hard, and messy aspects of adulthood in our history. At the top of this list: face your own mortality and experience the death of someone you love.
Before starting this season, we engaged in a creative conversation with editors, producer and executive director Chris Fisher, Lev Grossman, our partners at UCP and SYFY, and Jason Ralph. Jason's choice to leave the series was mutually exclusive, with a lot of respect for the story, fans of the series and a shared sense of deliberate and essential creative risk. We want The magicians to visit new strange and fascinating places, and we know that we can not get there by taking the same garden path that others have in front of us. So we did what you were not supposed to do: we killed the character who was supposed to be "safe". In real life, none of us are safe.
When we met Quentin Coldwater for the first time, he was in a psychiatric hospital, grappling with painful life and death issues. This season, we have seen the rare opportunity to complete his bow, leading to a real understanding of the incalculable value of his own life. Quentin, and we, have had to see the truth: there is no minor healing. The smallest action can have powerful consequences that we may never know fully.
The magicians has already been renewed for season five but no release date has been released.
