Tesla Inc. is considering upgrading its older Model S and X electric vehicles, whose sales have dropped significantly since the launch of the new Model S luxury sedan in 2017.
The Model S, a fully electric five-door freight elevator, was launched in 2012, while the Model X, a luxury all-electric crossover crossover, was launched in 2015. Model 3 dominated Tesla's sales EV quarter of this year with sales of 24,003 vehicles. In contrast, 3,200 S models were sold and 3,000 X models.
The three Tesla models combined accounted for 75% of the US market for electric vehicles in the first quarter.
Tesla seems to plan a complete powertrain update for the S and X models, as well as a refresh of the interior design of both models. Tesla would now be working on the development of new S and X models with the same battery architecture, based on the 2170 cells feeding model 3, Electrek said.
The equipment of the S and X models with the 2170 battery architecture will allow these vehicles to reach the same maximum charge rate as the model 3. This operation will also allow the S and X models to use the new Supercharger V3 , which is currently exclusive to the model. 3
Analysts said the launch of Supercharger V3 made Model S and X much less attractive to buyers who could not use the system.
They specified that the type of battery capacity likely to be fitted to the new S and X production models was not yet known, but that it should be higher than the current maximum capacity of 100 kWh. Model 3 has a maximum load rating of 250 kWh.
The new software includes a code to manage the CCS (Combined Loading System) for S and X models. This cability is available for models 3 sold in Europe.
This hardware upgrade could be released as early as June.
