CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cuyahoga County, in decline, lost 4,514 residents last year. However, as a result of the displacement of the population, the total population of the Cleveland-Akron area, in the seven counties, has changed little, according to estimates released Thursday.

Cuyahoga, with the ninth largest decline at the national level, is now the 35th largest county in America, with an estimated population of 1,243,857. Cuyahoga was ranked 33rd a year earlier, before being adopted by the counties of Travis, Texas, and Hennepin, Minnesota.

At the time of the 2010 census, Cuyahoga ranked 29th nationally and ranked first in Ohio with 1,280,122 residents. Cuyahoga is down 36 265 since then, losing six spots in the national rankings and second place in Ohio behind Franklin County.

Only Wayne County, Michigan, including Detroit, has lost more people since the 2010 census, falling from 66,691 to 1,753,893. Last year, the largest drop was recorded in Cook County (Chicago), down 24,009 but remains the second largest county in the country.
