John Kelly has repeatedly stated that homeland security is a "mess": report

Former Chief of Staff of the White House John KellyJohn Francis KellyMORE, who also held the position of chief of homeland security, repeatedly called the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) into a "mess" while he was working for the Trump administration.

The Washington Post, citing a former senior administration official, reported Wednesday night that Kelly had regularly filed a complaint about DHS while he was chief of staff and secretary of Homeland Security.

Kelly served as Secretary of Homeland Security between January and July 2017 before becoming Trump's Chief of Staff.

The anecdote about Kelly is part of a comprehensive report on the evolution of the DHS mission under Trump. The paper reports that Stephen Miller, White House advisor, and his advisor, have been eager to see this agency.

Miller would have argued that the EDS should be reorganized, stating that it was not logical for the agency to involve as many different parties. He called the agency a "total problem".

The Post, citing two officials, however, noted that a reorganization effort had never been made to Trump's office because no one seemed interested in "spending enough capital to do this".

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Hill.

Several officials suddenly left DHS earlier this month, including the Secretary of Homeland Security. Kelly had a stormy relationship with Trump during his tenure in the administration, including 17 months as chief of staff. According to the New York Times, he often told his associates that Trump was not up to his job as president.
