Todd Haselton, of CNBC, reviews the new $ 2,000 Samsung Galaxy Fold, which is the focus of all discussions at this year's Mobil World Congress.
Samsung's $ 1,980 Galaxy Fold phone is down for some users after a day or two of use. An evaluation unit provided to CNBC by Samsung is also completely unusable after only two days of use.
Shares of Samsung Electronics fell more than 3% on Thursday as a result of the emergence of several accounts of its forward-thinking folding phone before its launch in retail.
The phone, named Galaxy Fold and sold for $ 1,980, has not been distributed to gadget readers so far, but many people have reported that their screens seem to be disconnected and turned on or off permanently.
Samsung began accepting pre-orders for the Galaxy Fold last weekend, but its availability was quickly exhausted, suggesting that the offer is limited at least until its commercial launch. Retail.
South Korea's broad technology sector also declined, as SK Hynix and LG Electronics declined 1.25% and 2.5%, respectively.
The fall in Samsung's shares is linked to the first reports of the break-up of the Galaxy Fold, said Daniel Yoo, Head of Strategy and Global Research at Kiwoom Securities. In addition, investors have also responded to concerns about Samsung's role in deploying the next-generation 5G wireless standard, he added.
"With Qualcomm and Apple, the expectations for 5G were very high," Yoo said.
Apple and Qualcomm have settled a long-standing legal dispute over royalties earlier this week. The regulation included a payment from Apple to Qualcomm and a chipset supply agreement, suggesting that the Cupertino-based technology giant would buy Qualcomm chips for the future iPhone.
Analysts had previously said the dispute between Qualcomm and Apple could slow down Apple's plans to support next generation 5G networks, with the former being one of the leading chip providers that can connect to 5G networks. The agreement opens the possibility for Apple to launch an iPhone 5G faster than expected with Qualcomm's modem technology.
However, Samsung's Galaxy S10 and Fold appliances are "leading" among the 5G phones at the moment, according to Yoo.
"If quality control is likely to slow down demand, it will have a significant negative impact on the IT sector as a whole," said Yoo, noting that demand for chips in the first half of 2019 was already weak.
For its part, Samsung said in a statement that it was reviewing reports of broken Galaxy Folds:
A limited number of old samples of Galaxy Fold have been provided to the media for review. We have received some reports regarding the main display on the samples provided. We will thoroughly inspect these units in person to determine the cause of the case.
Separately, some reviewers reported removing the top layer of the display, which damaged the screen. The main screen of the Galaxy Fold is equipped with a top protective layer, which is part of the display structure designed to protect the screen from unwanted scratches. The removal of the protective layer or the addition of adhesives on the main screen can be damaged. We will ensure that this information is clearly communicated to our customers.
Commenting on the reports on the breaking of the Galaxy Fold, Yoo said that they seemed "too stretched".
The current concerns and the correction will be "limited in the short term", the problems encountered by the device being likely to be solved before its launch, he said.
