Buckeyes quarterback Matthew Baldwin enters the transfer portal

COLUMBUS – The Ohio State Quarterback season on the NCAA Transfer Portal is still unfinished and Matthew Baldwin is the last smuggler to have entered his name in the database.

After only one season spent with the Buckeyes recovering from knee surgery, the Texas native seems ready to move on and find another place to tap his potential. Ohio State coach Ryan Day confirmed the transfer request on Thursday night at Lettermen Row.

Baldwin's departure officially authorizes Justin Fields to take control of the offense for Ohio State, but the list remains short in depth and in experience. Unless the Buckeyes can find a transfer of graduates to reserve teams, the only other quarterback will be Chris Chugunov, who has two career starts in West Virginia.

Many sources familiar with Baldwin's thinking attribute this decision more to a desire to get closer to their country than to worry about future play time or problems with coaching staff. Baldwin waited for his turn at Lake Travis, the power of Lone Star State, and only started for one season. "In high school, I had [Baylor quarterback] Charlie Brewer has a year ahead of me and so I had the opportunity, my sophomore year, to change school, Baldwin said after the Rose Bowl. "It was a competition and I could have run away and got mine, opened another place for a worse school for three years. But I persevered, and I think it finally made me feel a lot better sitting behind him and being able to play my third year.

"I have never been someone who fears competition. I am not afraid of competition. I congratulate him. The best player will play here. There is no politics and I hope to be the best player. "

Baldwin did well for the spring camp, but it was unlikely to become the best option for Buckeyes with Fields in the short term.
