A man from Queens was arrested at the John F. Kennedy International Airport after being surprised by TSA agents who saw a handgun hidden in a sack, officials said Thursday.
Officers were warned that something was happening when the suitcase carrying the gun triggered an alarm while she was passing through a luggage scanner on Saturday. Once the bag was checked, it was not hard to find the weapon – it was wrapped in aluminum foil inside a recessed DVD player, according to the TSA.
The concept of wrapping a firearm in aluminum prompted TSA employees to scratch their heads.
"I do not know why he thought it would be a good idea," said TSA spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein.
The amateur attempt to conceal the 9mm unloaded handgun quickly became a threat to his Twitter account.
"Do you want to travel with a gun? I can assure you that wrapping it in aluminum foil and then concealing it inside a DVD player is not the best solution. A Queens man was arrested after TSA agents at @JFKairport detected the artfully concealed weapon in his DVD player. Come on, man! Farbstein writes.
The suspect was scheduled to board a flight to Mexico when the port authority police arrested him. He has been charged with weapons violation, according to the authorities.
His name was not immediately published.
