Ohio-based Matthew Baldwin, Matthew Baldwin, plans to enter the transfer portal, coach Ryan Day said Thursday.
Mr Day told Adam Rittenberg of ESPN that he thought that Baldwin, originally from Austin, Texas, would probably seek to play closer to home. The coach also said the Ohio State would look to add another quarterback before the season.
Baldwin posted a message on Twitter later Thursday night to explain his decision:

Baldwin, a freshman, has redshirted last season. He split his time with the first attack with Justin Fields 'second-year transfer in the Buckeyes' spring match on Saturday.
Day said Saturday that he was not ready to name a starting quarterback.
"I do not think we're making a decision right now, it will continue during the pre-season," said Day. "These guys have to keep going, and they will probably all have to play one way or another along the way.
Baldwin played with the first and second strings on Saturday. He completed 20 of his 36 pass attempts for 246 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Fields is a five-star former rookie who left Georgia after his first college season. He only completed four of his 13 pass attempts in the spring match, although one of them was a 98-yard touchdown throw to receiver Binjimen Victor.
Tom VanHaaren of ESPN contributed to this report.
