Chapel Hill, N.C. – After an investigation by a Charlotte law firm that revealed "widespread support," Sylvia Hatchell resigned Thursday from her duties as head coach of the women's basketball team from the University of North Carolina.
Hatchell, inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2013, is the best female basketball coach in the history of the Atlantic Coast Conference. She has a career record of 1,023 to 405 and a mark of 751 to 325 in 33 years at UNC-Chapel Hill with a national title in 1994.
Hatchell became the third female Division I coach with 1,000 career victories in 2017, made her 23rd career NCAA game last month, and is the only coach to have three-level national championships – AIAW, NAIA and NCAA.

The review found arguments in favor of allegations of "insensitive comments to the breed" that led "many people to the program to think that she lacked awareness and appreciation for the effect of her remarks on those who had heard them ".
She also revealed the "frustration" of players and UNC medical personnel "under the influence perceived and unduly influenced by Hatchell with regard to medical problems and the pressure to play".
Parents of players who spoke anonymously to the Washington Post said Hatchell's remarks included a comment that his players would be "hanging from trees with noose" if their performance did not improve.
According to the Washington Post, Hatchell was also accused of encouraging his players to engage in a "war song" aimed at "honoring" the Native American ancestry of an assistant coach.
In a statement issued with the announcement of his resignation, Hatchell wrote in part:
