Parents of a 5-year-old Crystal Lake child, missing Thursday morning, no longer cooperate with the authorities, according to an interview with Good Morning America.
Crystal Lake lawyer, George Kililis, who represents JoAnn Cunningham – the mother of the missing child Andrew "AJ" Friend – told Good Morning America that after realizing that the police were considering his customer as a suspect, he had advised Cunningham to remain silent.
"I just want my kids," Cunningham said in the interview. "It's all I have, it's my life, it's my children."
Freund's parents said that he had been last seen around 9 pm. Wednesday. Kililis also spoke outside the house on Friday.
"At one point, we had the impression that she could be considered a suspect," he said at that time. "I do not know if she does it or not."
Authorities do not believe that the missing boy from Crystal Lake has been kidnapped and instead focus on "the residence," according to a press release sent by police to Crystal Lake on Friday morning.
According to the release, police teams from kindergarten to grade 9 have detected Andrew's smell in the house, indicating that the boy had not gone on foot.
FBI members specializing in missing children and the Crystal Lake Police Department are investigating.
The Illinois Department of Child and Family Services took custody of Andrew's younger brother.
DCFS has been in contact with the family of Andrew "AJ" Freund since his birth in 2013 with opiates in his system and allegations of negligence against his mother, confirmed Friday evening DCFS Deputy Director of Communications, Jassen Strokosch.
Andrew was placed in DCFS custody in November 2013, a timeline provided by DCFS broadcasts.
The agency has had family contact from time to time until the end of last year, Strokosch said.
