OXFORD, Miss. (AP) – Free beer tomorrow, the old joke goes, but it's happening in a Mississippi city.
Oxford Eagle reports that city aldermen voted 5-1 on Tuesday to allow specialty stores in beer sales to offer free one-ounce samples to customers.
A store could offer a customer up to five samples per 24-hour period.
Jackson Beer Co.'s owner, Allen Jackson, said the order would allow him to hold tastings without offering food, as is now required.
The order will come into effect 30 days after its adoption. The stores will have to pass an inspection by the Oxford Police Department. They must show that they have a designated area to drink beer and that the samples are only intended for those 21 and over. Stores must have at least eight beer pressure.
