It would not be a month at Google without a renowned product. The functionality of Chrome's data economy has evolved considerably since its introduction many years ago. It now puts more emphasis on performance than on reducing the use of cellular data. As such, the Chrome team is now renaming the feature in "Lite Mode".
Pages Lite on Chrome 73
The Lite mode includes a few different features, some newer than others. Images and other large files are server-side compressed (much like the Opera Mini runs), and if you have a particularly bad connection, you will have a minimal version of the page automatically generated by Google. If your computer is also using a meter connection, I'm sad to report that the Chrome team still does not intend to switch from Lite mode to Chrome's desktop.
