According to a press release from the Hawaii Fire Department, the woman was kayaking at sea in Anaehoomalu Bay, in the south of Kohala, when she was bitten to the right thigh. The tourist was brought ashore by kayak and then flown to the North Hawaii Community Hospital, where she is in a stable state, according to the fire department.
The fire department flew several kilometers to shore after the woman was bitten and saw no shark in the water. However, the surrounding beaches are closed until further notice, according to the Civil Defense Department of Hawaii County.
The bite was about 12 inches in diameter and came from a black-tipped reef shark, according to Dan Dennison, spokesman for Hawaii's Department of Land and Natural Resources. Dennison told CNN that it was unusual.

This is the third shark attack in the state of Hawaii in 2019, according to the department's archives. The last incident occurred with a victim in a canoe. The shark bit the flank of the canoe but did not hurt the boater.
In 2018, three incidents were reported, including an attack that cost the victim's right leg below the knee. No deaths have been reported since 2015.
