How Oppo installs a 10x zoom camera in its 5G phone

In 2015, Israel-based Corephotonics – which would have been acquired by Samsung earlier this year – approached Oppo with a cunning concept consisting of a normal camera plus a 3x zoom periscope. This "folded camera optics" solution allowed to increase the overall zoom range up to a factor 5 more convenient, while maintaining a reduced component height, the telephoto lenses being able to stick at similar diameters.

Li was convinced and by the end of 2015, his team had gathered resources to start designing a new camera based on the Corephotonics solution. The first component samples were released in mid-2016, and they would eventually become the demonstrations presented at the MWC 2017. To explain why this was not marketed shortly after, Mr. Li explained that there were still many obstacles around the optical assembly method: stabilization in the periscope and lossless transition between the two cameras.

Interestingly, Li confessed that the prism of the periscope in its original design was likely to detach, which was partly due to stabilization at one axis of the prism. As a result, a revised design permutated: the prism was responsible for two-axis stabilization, while the telephoto group only had to deal with autofocus. Problem solved. In fact, two-axis stabilization is easier to apply to the prism than much heavier lenses.

Even today, Li's team has further increased the range of the hybrid zoom to 10x with a more powerful 5x zoom periscope, while achieving an impressive f / 3.0 aperture thanks to two large cut-out lenses.
