Verizon has announced that it will deploy 5G in more than 30 cities in 2019. Today, it names 20 cities in addition to Chicago and Minneapolis where the service has already been activated. This is also opening preorders for the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G phone with some incentives.

The new cities extend from the east coast to the west and from north to south. They will receive Verizon's very broad band 5G millimeter wave service before the end of the year. The 20 cities are:

Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dallas, Des Moines, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Little Rock, Memphis, Phoenix, Providence, San Diego, Salt Lake City and Washington DC.

Verizon says other 5G cities will be announced later this year.

Verizon also opens pre-orders for the Galaxy S10 5G today. It offers up to $ 450 for eligible phone exchanges and a $ 200 prepaid MasterCard if you 1) upgrade to Verizon, 2) purchase a Galaxy S10 5G with a device payment plan, and 3) register for Verizon Unlimited. The company also announced that access fees to the 5G Ultra Wideband would be $ 10 / month. The phone starts at $ 1,299.99 if purchased directly and can be purchased at Verizon stores on May 16th.

Our experience with Verizon's 5G millimeter-wave service in Chicago has been less than brilliant. We found extremely fast but difficult to find a signal. Now, business leaders have begun to explain why, while offering little hope to US residents living in rural areas.

"The millimeter wave spectrum (mmWave) offers great potential in terms of speed and capacity, but it does not move far from the cell site and does not penetrate materials at all," the CTO said on Monday. T-Mobile, Neville Ray. "It will never be materially sized beyond the small pockets of 5G hotspots in dense urban environments."

"We must all remember that this is not a spectrum of coverage," said Hans Vestberg, Verizon's CEO, a day later.

In other words: early adopters, beware.
