Tab is an extension of the Google Chrome web browser that restores the tab-disabling feature in the browser.
Google has removed options to disable individual tabs in Chrome in recent versions. Although the browser still offers commands to disable audio playback in Chrome, disabling audio in any tab automatically mutes it for the entire site. this may not be too much of a problem for most Chrome users, as it is rare that multiple pages of a site are all read and audio is open.
However, under certain circumstances, this can be useful. Maybe you play several games at the same time on the same browser, you look at several videos but you need audio in one of them, or you just want to have one of them. a video is stored in one tab while viewing another.
Several other browsers, for example Firefox, support mute individual tabs.
You can disable any Chrome site by clicking on the icon in front of its address in the UI. Select Site Settings from the pop-up menu and look for the Sound permission on the page that opens. Set it to Mute to prevent this particular site from automatically playing back audio.
Tab Muter
Tab Muter is a browser extension for Google Chrome that reintroduces the audio mute features in the browser. The extension adds its icon to the main toolbar of Chrome when you install it. You enable the extension icon to toggle the audio feature of the site into the active tab.
One click cuts the audio from the tab, another restores the sound. A quick test on YouTube revealed that the extension worked perfectly. I used it to mute a YouTube video while audio playback from another video was not affected by the mute.
The feature also works for other sites. Tab Muter should work for all sites for which disabling audio at the Chrome site scale works.
The muting is applied to the tab and not to the site. You may notice this when you load another website in the tab that is trying to play audio. Any audio content is muted by tabbing in the tab, regardless of the site.
Closing words
Tabulation is a well-designed extension that restores the tab-disabling feature in the Chrome browser. Chrome users missing the feature can install the browser extension to restore it.
Now, it's your turn: do you prefer the audio break or the site break? (via Caschy)
