NFL Draft 2019: Lions select Penn State CB Amani Oruwariye in the fifth round

ALLEN PARK – Lions have returned to the path of selecting the names of leading schools expected in this category.

Detroit placed his fifth-round pick on Penn State cornerback Amani Oruwariye, his fourth consecutive defensive backstroke.

Oruwariye is a half-corner of a breathtaking 6-foot-2, 205-pound press cover. He has collected eight interceptions over the past three years, participating in the Big Ten conference. It has improved a bit each season, from second team to conference in 2017 to first team honors last year.

"Something I always describe myself on the field as just a playmaker, just someone who's around the ball, someone who's going to pull the ball, whether it's a forced fumble or an interception no matter what that entails, "Oruwariye told the NFL combines. "But I just love getting takeaways, so that's what I do."

It helps to meet a constant need for second cornerback, facing Darius Slay. Detroit could not trust the 2017 second round pick, Teez Tabor, last year and it now seems like it will allow Oruwariye to compete with Tabor at camp for a chance to start. The Lions have signed with Justin Coleman for the offseason, but he now seems more likely to start in the slot.

Oruwariye ran an unofficial 40-yard run of 4.47 seconds, highlighting his overall speed, but only five half-turns of the NFL Combine had a worse long jump, highlighting concerns about his ability to catch up with the ground quickly if he was beaten. This is the reason why he projects himself mainly as a press corner half, which is more than his size.

NFL.com predicted that Oruwariye would start in the third round, while Bleacher Report was making fun of him in the fourth.

Oruwariye is the fifth selection of Lions in this project, following Iowa's tight first round, TJ Hockenson, second-round Hawaii linebacker Jahlani Tavai, Boston College's third-round defender Will Harris, and Clemson's fourth-round defensive end Austin Bryant.
