A Mozilla support document explains how the organization will eliminate Firefox for Android this year and replace it with a new mobile browser. This browser, called Fenix, is completely new and is designed to overcome the extremely low consumption of Firefox on Android.
"The goal is to provide users with a legacy Firefox product for Android that is secure and supported until Fenix is ready to migrate, while reducing ongoing support costs," said the technical support document. Mozilla, reported by Ghacks. "We will not offer new mobile web platform features until Fenix ships."
From what I can say, the current version of Firefox for Android is essentially in maintenance mode and will only be supported by bugfixes, until the new version, codenamed Fenix, be ready for publication. Mozilla intends to make this transition this year, and it will probably end support for the current Firefox for Android by 2020.
Those interested in testing Fenix today will need to download it from the Taskcluster website because it is not available on the Google Play Store.
