Police demanded the return of $ 30,000 (£ 23,000), fallen to the back of a Michigan truck.

Officers who reacted Thursday to a traffic problem found drivers scrambling to collect dollar notes scattered on Highway 31.

The owner told the police that he had accidentally left a box containing money on the bumper of his truck.

About $ 7,000 was handed out on Saturday, which sparked a grateful message from Facebook's officers.

"Thank you and we have come a long way! We congratulate you on your honesty!" The Department of Public Safety Grand Haven wrote. "The owner of the money will thank you for it."

Two 17-year-olds gave $ 630 to the authorities, while a woman gave nearly $ 4,000.

The police managed to recover only $ 2,470 on the scene Thursday after closing sections of the road to collect money.

"Anyone who recovers money is asked to return it to the Department of Public Security Grand Haven," said a call.
