The Lions moved closer to the top 10 and then took an offensive player in the sixth round. Then, in the seventh lap, they returned to the tight final position.
Detroit selected compatriot Isaac Nauta with his first pick in the seventh round. Then they returned to the defensive side of the ball with their last choice, Arizona's defensive tackle, P.J. Johnson.
With only 6 feet 3 inches and 244 pounds, Nauta is much smaller than Detroit's first choice, T.J. Hockenson, who is 6 and 5 years old and 251 years old. He was not a great sportsman either, but has three years of experience in a leading program at the Southeastern Conference.
In Georgia, Nauta has recorded eight touchdown passes in three years. He finished last season with 30 catches for 430 yards. At its size, Detroit may be experimenting with him more in a role of U-turn than in the extreme-limit areas they seek to provide to block and receive production.
Nauta is the tight fourth end that Detroit added during the off-season, a complete redesign of the NFL's least productive room since last season. In addition to Hockenson and Nauta, Detroit gave start-up money to Jesse James and also added an article on development in Logan Thomas.
The Lions lost Luke Willson and Levine Toilolo on the loose. The two new choices and two independent agent signatures firmly place 2017's fourth-round pick, Michael Roberts, on the player list.
Johnson has not been invited to the NFL Scouting Combine, but the Arizona website lists it at 6 feet 4 inches and 335 pounds. He had been chosen an honorable mention from the PAC-12 Conference last season, when he recorded 8.5 tackles for defeat and three sacks. Arizona was its third school after 2017 at City College San Francisco and in 2016 at Sacramento State.
Johnson will be competing for a backup role behind Damon's "Snacks" Harrison and A'Shawn Robinson in the middle of Detroit's defensive line. He is the second defensive lineman, Detroit, added this project, joining Clemson's fourth-round defender, Austin Bryant.
With these selections, the Lions 2019 Preliminary Project Class is now complete and they are expanding the list with unedited free agent signatures.
