A 19-year-old man opened fire Saturday inside a synagogue in southern California while worshipers were ready to celebrate the last day of Passover, killing a woman and wounding three people , announced the authorities.

The man, whose name was not disclosed, fled Chabad of Poway synagogue by car and then called 911 to tell him he was involved in the shooting, the chief of the police said. San Diego police, David Nisleit, to the press.

An off-duty border patrol officer spotted the suspect while he allegedly fled the area and the officer reportedly opened fire.

A San Diego policeman who was going to the scene after hearing the call on the sending of the message spotted the suspect's vehicle and stopped him.

"The suspect stopped, jumped out of his car with his hands in the air and was immediately placed in custody by the San Diego Police Department," said Nisleit. "While the officer was detaining this 19-year-old man, he clearly saw a rifle sitting in the passenger seat of the suspect vehicle."

The officer found an anti-recoil type rifle on the front passenger seat.

A woman died as a result of her injuries in a hospital, said at a press conference Sheriff Bill Gore of San Diego County. Among the other wounded were two men and a girl who are all in stable condition, he added.

Gore said he did not have details about a possible motive for the shooting and that they were reviewing copies of his publications on social networks.

The wounded were transported to the Palomar Medical Center. The medical center has received four patients, confirmed to Fox News Bobette Brown, the director of communications of the establishment.

Nisleit said the authorities have been stepping up patrols of places of worship as a precaution since he was arrested.

Passover began on April 19 and ended on Saturday.

The shooting took place exactly six months ago. A shooting in a Pittsburgh synagogue had killed 11 people during the deadliest attack against Jews in American history.
