Almost six years ago, the Colombian Karol G – then known as Carolina Giraldo Navarro – decided to move away from pursuing her dream of becoming a great musician.
But while she was traveling by bus from Long Island to New York, the aspiring singer saw an advertisement for a course on the business side of the music industry that would change her life.
"I'm back in love with music," the singer recently told Page Six over lunch. "It was to understand music in a more professional way, as a business – if I can do what I love and have a passion for, do it really. And I went home [to Colombia] and started working again.
Today, Karol G has more than 5.3 billion feeds worldwide, more than 15 million followers on Instagram, and leads the Billboard charts.
The 28-year-old Latin Grammy Award is currently touring Latin America, Europe and the United States. After collaborating with Shaggy, Bad Bunny, Ozuna, Nicky Jam and J. Balvin, the rebel reggaeton is preparing to release "Ocean," his sophomore album, next month.
"My first album, I did not have this awareness of what I was doing, so I've been working on this album for over a year and I had to stop thinking about who I am. [going to do] otherwise, she told us.
The singer "Ahora Me Llama" told us that besides her usual reggaeton bangers, the album also included a piano song, a guitar song, a trap song and a collaboration with Damian Marley, among others.
"I'm super nervous," she said about the upcoming publication. "I would like [listeners] to feel what I feel. I want to show people that I have different things … I want to be this Latina Girl around the world with different types of music. "
Karol told us it was because "it's the only place I can communicate with myself".
She added, "I did not grow up by the ocean but I'm going to die near the ocean."
The new album comes at a time when Latin music is beginning to dominate the American music scene.
"I do not know what's going on, but of course, I think the moment is huge for Latin music, especially for urban and reggaeton music," she said.
Karol thinks women have "changed the game," he said. The Latin American music community supported each other, with men helping women and vice versa.
Maybe his main support is Anuel AA, another reggaeton star and boyfriend, who is currently touring with the star.
Karol told us that it was his favorite collaboration so far, "because it was like everything was real, the video and the song, everything we composed and enjoyed."
Earlier this month, Karol dropped the single "Punto G", which translates to "G-spot" in English. The Rolling Stone magazine said: "Few reggaeton songs have defended the vagina as intimately as Karol G does in" Punto G "- choosing to pass the graphic details, Karol masters the delicate art of sensual suggestion.
"I would like [girls] to feel comfortable with themselves. They have to start loving themselves, "she said of the sexy song.
She added, "Before, I felt so embarrassed and now, I love her. I love myself I love what I am and I want to show this open mind to my people. "
Karol G does not intend to slow down when "Ocean" will collapse early next month.
"I will not be at home sleeping," she said. "I want these days [off] really talk to myself. I like to write [about] things I do not like [about] myself, my career, me as a singer, so if I can write it and think of a strategy to change it, that's how I will spend my time. "
