Just in time for the national Tell A Story day, comes an expansion of Google's storytelling capabilities: "Tell Me a Story" is now available via Assistant on iOS and Android. With this feature, mobile users can ask Google to read a story using the simple command "Hey, Google, tell me a story before going to bed". Users located in the United States have a small additional feature.
Previously, Google had already launched this narration feature on its Google Home smart speakers, which of course requires the user to formulate his request through the speaker instead of his phone. This is an interesting feature because it is accessible to children who may not have access to a smartphone or tablet, but it limits the location of the stories.
The "tell me a story" command now works on Android and iOS devices, Google announced in a blog post this week. The mobile support has arrived in India, Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom, in addition to the United States. However, only US users support the remote play feature on Google Home smart speakers.
The stories are aimed at children and are drawn from a library of secure children's books, including Let's be firefighters and Robot Rampage. In order to use this feature on mobile devices, Android and iOS users will need to update Google Play Books to the latest version of the app.
Assuming you're using the simultaneous playback feature and a Google Home speaker, the story will be complemented by sound effects. Google Assistant also supports reading audio books from Google Play. The user must be logged into his Play Books account and own the audiobook to hear more than one sample.
