Why the Denver Broncos wrote Drew Lock

Joe Flacco has already seen this before. In 2018, the Baltimore Ravens advanced in the first round of the draft with the Philadelphia Eagles to select quarterback Lamar Jackson with the 32nd overall pick. Flacco had to dispel rumors that his quarterback position was going to fall into Jackson's hands, until rumors became reality on November 18, 2018. Injuries and lack of production apparently forced the Ravens to make the decision to leave with Jackson. now, Flacco's fate in Denver does not seem to be very different.

Enter 6'4 ", 225 lbs QB Drew Lock from Missouri. After a senior season that was nowhere near statistics production in his junior year, Lock had been a big hit in his stock. The Denver Broncos seized an opportunity and grabbed it, trading with Cincinnati for 42nd place and capturing the first quarter of John Elway's Jury. The temptation was irresistible.

Lock has since said all the good things. He knows he is the substitute, but his confidence and appearance have made comparisons with the QB of the former Broncos, Jay Cutler. Since Dalton Risner and Drew Lock have been trapped, the Broncos' second day of racing has become one of the best in 2019.

The Missouri product seems pumped and excited to get to work. The fact that Denver caught Lock in the second round of the 2019 project, instead of the first, eases some of the pressure on Elway and Fangio so that they play Lock immediately. This should give Flacco enough time to become familiar with the system and win early, here in Denver, if he does.

Lock is eager to kiss his new orange and blue son after growing up in Missouri and learned to hate these colors as a Chiefs fan. As the project shows, there will be skeptics, while Lock would have fallen to 42nd overall, after being considered a surefire player, there is barely a season. Lock is ready to prove them wrong. The dynamic between the way Denver uses Flacco and Lock will be closely monitored, and Flacco has made it known that he thought it was his team.

It must be hard to keep a cool head while you wait and watch the teams pick from other players, without knowing when your name will be called. However, Lock is taking advantage of the opportunity in Denver and there may not have been a better fit. Elway compared the Broncos plan with their QBs to Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers. Broncos Country is willing to be patient with this plan, insofar as it leads to a Super Bowl win, as it did for Rodgers in 2010.

Five years is awfully long for Denver to wait for a Super Bowl. Some wonder if Elway will be present as GM to complete his final plan, but there is a trend in how the Broncos designate their players. Joe Flacco's job this year may be as tough as the one he faced a year ago, but the veteran Super Bowl MVP is not one to fear competition and it does not appear that the young Drew Lock was. It should be fun.
