One of the most interesting battles of positions to watch in the coming months will be the competition at the receiver behind Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs.
While these two players are well established, the group behind them has the chance to win reps. Laquon Treadwell, Chad Beebe and Brandon Zylstra will be returning home from 2018, and the Vikings also added Jordan Taylor as an independent agency earlier this month.
On Saturday, the Vikings had two selections in the seventh round on receivers Dillion Mitchell (Oregon) and Olabisi Johnson (Colorado).
"We have not evaluated them yet on the training ground, so the evaluation part starts this weekend with the preparation of the rookie mini-camp," Spielman said of the seventh round selections. "So we're just going – that's what the training camp is all about, all we want is to get the best list of 90 people we can have now."
"Both are very athletic. Dillon Mitchell has explosive speed and playability, "said Spielman. "Olabisi is a very fast athlete for a bigger catcher who has excellent hands. So we will have a better sense [next week]. "
Mitchell racked up 1,184 yards in 2018, leading Pac 12 and was a school record in one season. He also had 10 touchdowns.
Johnson captured 125 passes for 2019 yards and 11 touchdowns (16.2 yards per receiving) in four seasons at Colorado State.
The Vikings made 12 choices, which means that their squad is now 79 players in total. Spielman said the team would look to add unmodified free agents and reach the total of 90 before the inauguration of the rookie minicamp next week.
"We're going to have the top 90 players here, and once they're there, we'll face the best players," Spielman said. "We are here to win football matches"
Spielman said the goal was to bring together the best players possible and create as much competition as possible.
But Spielman also noted that just because a guy is not drafted does not mean that he does not have a chance to be on the list.
"We are up there pounding, spending money and trying to find the best guys possible," Spielman said. "They are finalizing this now, but think of the number of free agents in the colleges on this list right now, how many free agency guys have started for us, from Eric Wilsons to Anthony Harrises. a lot of guys, Thielen and CJ Ham.
"So we have a lot of guys and a lot of free college agents coming in here and doing this football team, and I think that's why – we've drawn a corner in the first round and have [three] Holton Hill played for us last year, "added Spielman. "[If] if you are a free candidate or if you come as a new player next weekend, we will try to find the best players who will help us win football games. It's a little philosophy since [Head Coach Mike] Zimmer is here and I believe it too.
