WESTMORELAND, Tenn. – Police are investigating whether a suspect captured after a multi-hour manhunt knew five people whose bodies were found in two houses in rural Tennessee.
Michael Cummins, 25, was arrested on Saturday night after being shot about a mile away from one of Sumner County's crime scenes, said Josh DeVine, a spokesman for the Tennessee Investigations Bureau. .
Police said officers responding to the 911 call from a family member had allowed the initial discovery of four bodies and a wounded person at the first home. The victim was transported to the hospital with unspecified wounds. The fifth body was found in another house.
The killings took place near the town of Westmoreland. The BIT thinks that the two scenes are linked.
The authorities have not disclosed any details about the victims. They also did not specify what type of weapon had been used.
DeVine said that at least one officer had shot Cummins after he got out of the woods. Cummins reportedly produced many weapons and the situation worsened. He was then taken to the hospital for treatment, says DeVine.
None of the officers responding to the investigation were injured.
The TBI aircraft was able to help the authorities spot Cummins on the ground in a creek bed, DeVine said.
A number of law enforcement agencies were looking for Cummins, claiming he could be armed and dangerous.
"The community should be able to rest a little easier tonight, knowing (Cummins) is in custody tonight," said DeVine.
TBI is investigating deaths and shootings involving officers, DeVine said.
Sumner County is northeast of Nashville and borders Kentucky.
