Les Mets appoint Travis Arnaud for a term, recalls Tomas Nido

Travis of Arnaud entered the season on a short leash while recovering from Tommy John's operation was a constant obstacle.

The Mets acted accordingly, nominating the receiver for an assignment Sunday and remembering Tomas Nido from Triple-A Syracuse to take on backup tasks behind the plate.

Arnaud came to the Mets in 2012 in the trade that sent R.A. Dickey in Toronto. He was the centerpiece of this exchange, with Noah Syndergaard actually serving as extra room in the package.

"What we saw of Travis, is difficult," said manager Mickey Callaway. "… we have hard decisions to make, and obviously it's a tough decision."

But Arnaud never became fully the hitter that he was supposed to be and the defensive issues – apart from the excellent pitch pitch – thwarted him among the fans. This year, Arnaud had two hits in 25 caps. He was sent back to second base to try a double on Saturday. It was his last shot before being DFA's.

Arnaud's past with the Mets has been marked by numerous injury histories, culminating with Tommy John in 2018 for most of the season. The Mets finally offered him a contract for 2019, even with the signing of Wilson Ramos take charge as a receiver everyday.

But Arnaud could not produce enough to keep his backup role.

In his seven-year career with the Mets, the 30-year-old has averaged .242 batting with 42 homers.
