A defensive back from Washburn University was killed in a shootout Sunday morning in Topeka, Kansas, also injuring teammate Corey Ballentine, selected by the New York Giants on Saturday.
Washburn President Jerry Farley confirmed that 23-year-old Dwane Simmons was killed in a shootout in a school letter on Sunday. Ballentine should recover completely, Farley wrote.
"Whenever we lose a student, it's a sad occasion, but it's particularly moving to lose a student by such an insane act," Farley wrote. "Both Dwane and Corey were excellent examples and representatives of the football team and Washburn University in general – it was a terrible way to end a day that should have been a day of celebration. and a day in Washburn and the beginning of Corey's professional career. Simmons, a defensive back who entered his senior season in 2019, had played 22 games in three seasons at Washburn.

Ballentine, a cornerback, won the Cliff Harris Award 2018 as a small defensive player in college and was one of three Division II players selected for the Senior Bowl. Aged 23, he ran 4.47 40 in NFL scouting and was selected in the sixth round; he was the last of the three half-corners designated by the giants.
The giants said they were aware of the situation and spoke to Ballentine.
"Our thoughts are with Dwane Simmons' family, friends, and teammates, as well as the rest of the Washburn community," said the Giants in a statement.
Police said that an investigation into the shooting was underway.
