HUGO, Okla. – A man arrested under a theft warrant after police opened fire on the truck he was in, injuring three young children, was in custody in a Oklahoma prison on Sunday. .
The Choctaw County Prison Records indicate that William Devaughn Smith was in custody for a robbery complaint. He had been detained in Lamar County, Texas after being released from a hospital. The records do not indicate whether Smith has a lawyer who could speak on his behalf.
The Oklahoma state investigation bureau announced that four children and their mother were with Smith when two officers approached him and that gunshots broke out on Friday in Hugo, in Oklahoma, near the border with the state of Texas. Smith's relationship with the woman and children is not clear.
Smith was treated for injuries at a hospital in Paris, Texas. The office said three children aged 5, 4 and 1 had been injured without putting their lives at risk.
Authorities said the children were taken to an Oklahoma hospital, but they did not disclose their conditions or their names.
Olivia Hill told Sherman (Texas), KXII-TV news channel, that she is the mother of the children. She stated that the 4-year-old girl was shot in the head, that the 5-year-old girl had a broken skull and that the 1-year-old girl was shot in the face. She stated that the fourth child, 2 years old, "was not hit by any bullet".
The investigators have not yet determined what led to the shooting. A spokeswoman for the State Investigation Bureau said the authorities were still trying to know the details of Smith's interaction with the police.
It is also unclear whether the officers who opened fire could see the children inside the truck.
Smith is believed to have committed an armed robbery on April 11 in a Hugo Pizza Hut.
A message on the police's Facebook page in Hugo, Oklahoma, indicates that a man entered the restaurant's entrance, leaning an object on the back of an employee and asked for money. The police stated that the worker had handed over money and that the thief had left.
