CUPERTINO, Calif. (CNN) – Apple has introduced new features designed to track and limit screen time. She then began to control the competition, according to a report released Saturday by The New York Times.
The technology giant has removed or restricted the features of some of the most popular third-party apps to monitor screen time, including apps that allow parents to more control over phone use by their kids, indicated the report.
Data collected by the analysis company and the Sensor Tower newspaper revealed that Apple had removed or restricted "at least 11 of the 17 most-frequently-downloaded parental control and screen control applications." Apple allegedly accused them of including contrary features to the rules of the App Store, even though the apps had already got the seal of approval from Apple.
OurPact was the most widely installed parental control app with three million downloads before it started from the App Store in February, according to the Times.
"They shot us unprepared without warning," Amir Moussavian, CEO, said, "they systematically kill the industry."
Several developers also said they were forced to remove some key features to stay on the App Store.
Tech Crunch also released a report in December on strengthening Apple's third-party control of apps.
Apple spokesman Tammy Levine told the Times that Apple was "treating all applications in the same way, including those that compete with our own services."
"Our motivation is to create a dynamic application ecosystem that gives consumers access to as many quality applications as possible," she said, citing privacy concerns as to why Apple has forced developers to change some features. Levine also told the Times that Apple's shares were not related to the deployment of its own features.
In an email on Sunday night, Levine pointed to a letter published by Apple in which she explained the reasons for her business.
In the face of criticisms that Apple is not doing enough to get people out of their screens, last year Apple launched a suite of new features designed to help customers track and limit their use. .
However, Apple's internal parenting features only work on other iPhones and are not compatible with Android devices. Users also said they were much more forgiving than third-party applications, the Times reported.
