American idolThe other eight finalists faced some of Queen's biggest successes on Sunday, and by the end of the night, there were only six candidates left for the throne race. But eight solo performances do not make a two-hour event, so IdolThe last eight have also been paired for a series of duets (mostly successful) of other artists.
Before arriving at the results, let's break down all the performances of this evening …
WALKER BURROUGHS, "A little crazy love called Queen's" | After his "extremely awkward" practice with Adam Lambert – who, in defense of Burroughs, made Look like a pirate – real life Archie Andrews took the stage for a performance that was … just as embarrassing. The voice was good, but I was too distracted by the father's movements to appreciate them. We've seen Burroughs doing magic on the piano, so I do not know why the series forces him to strut on the stage to try to be something he is not. Judges constantly insist on "authenticity", but I start to wonder if they do not even know what it means anymore. Category B
MADISON VANDENBURG, Queen "The show must continue" | Lambert immediately pinpointed VanDenburg's only notorious mistake – his inability to convey emotion in his performances – and promised to take his advice to heart. That said, I would not say exactly that she kept her promise, as she was clearing her way through a dramatic ballad. Technically speaking, it was an impressive performance, but if the goal is to improve, I would not say that VanDenburg hit home. (Or as Katy Perry says awkwardly, "You still have a way to go.") And I'm a little upset by the difference between what the judges want (the hair turns!) And what the series gives us literal nails in VanDenburg's hair). Grade: A-
HARDY WOOL & LACI KAYE BOOTH, "Jackson" by Johny Cash | The strength was definitely with these two tonight … and by that, I mean that the chemistry they allegedly exposed during their duet could not have been more forced. And Perry certainly pulled the line of the company by suggesting that Hardy's big smile was the result of his singing partner. ("Mind you, Maddie and Caleb!") Everyone was sidelined, the performance was solid – so why eclipse the talent with a fake romantic angle? You are better than that, Idol. (Or not.)
Grade: B + (Click here to watch!)
JEREMIAH LLOYD HARMON, Queen's "Who wants to live forever" | "I'm going to sing with my heart, and whatever it sounds like, it'll be beautiful," Harmon said after his rehearsal with Lambert, and he kept his promise. It was the first song of the night that really took us on a journey, which started simply and crescendo into something really powerful. Lambert was right when he asked Harmon to rethink the use of a guitar. it was really like he was discovering his soul on this stage. The fact that her parents are in the audience and loved the show! – was simply the icing on the cake. Grade: A
ALEJANDRO ARANDA, Queen's Under Pressure | As he usually does, Aranda gave his own twist to this classic jam of queens, confessing during rehearsals that he was afraid to over-change things. Arriving at the time of the performance, it was clear that he had no worries, which gives us a surprisingly soothing interpretation of a song about being crushed by the weight of your own stress. He even hinted at a guitar solo, making this a real performance of Aranda. Grade: B +
WADE COTA & ALYSSA RAGHU, Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, "Not enough mountain, that's enough" | First of all, how dare Bobby Bones says that most people know this song from Guardians of the Galaxy? He had so little time in front of the screen tonight. Why did he have to go and ruin it by saying that? Anyway, this unlikely pairing gave us quite a good performance, even though the background singers drowned them completely during the chorus. Category B-
MADISON VANDENBURG & JEREMIAH LLOYD HARMON, "A Million Dreams" of The biggest showman | It was probably my favorite duet of the night and not just because it was like a premonition of the last two of the season. He overpowered her a bit, which I did not expect, but when they were on, they were sure. (I do not know what "beautiful dance of respect" was watching Perry.) Grade: A
HARDY WOOL, Queen's "Fat Bottom Girls" from Queen's | "Your voice is good, have fun," could be the best advice anyone has given Hardy all season. (The real The best advice would be to drop this "party with a Hardy". And I actually think that Hardy took Lambert's words to heart, both in his interactions with the public and in the whole. (I can not imagine a social event in which these glittering gold shoes would fit, but I still want them.) Category B
LACI KAYE BOOTH, "The love of my life" of the Queen | I really only have one word after this performance: YES! … OK, maybe a little more: from the smoky voice to the intimate bond that she created with the audience, Booth was really at its best. And do not even throw me on the outfit, a look appropriate for a budding country queen. In fact, I would like to change one of my previous statements; I would love to see Booth in the last two of the season. (I've also appreciated that Booth criticized Ryan Seacrest's claim about whether she thought of someone singing.) Could not a girl have talent without this show that is trying to anchoring her to a guy? Saying to Bones that she is proud to represent girls from the little town "was also a good idea.) Grade: A
ALEJANDRO ARANDA & WALKER BURROUGHS, Simon & Garfunkel's "Mrs. Robinson " | Assuming the disc is published, I would like to hear the studio version of this duet. The voices of Aranda and Burroughs mingled nicely, and the strengths of a potentially great performance were there, but something kept it from being truly exceptional – even if it resulted in a charming little harmony. Category B
WADE COTA, Queen's "We are the champions" | Come to bookstores this summer: Are you there, Falsetto? It's me, Wade. … OK, now that I've had fun, this performance was really not that bad, although I raised my eyebrows at the arrangement a few times. And even if he swept words. (Bravo to be able to pass, I suppose …?) Grade: C +
ALYSSA RAGHU, "Someone to love" of the queen | Given the lukewarm reception she has received from America so far, I have the feeling that Raghu really needed a win … and it was not exactly that. Of course, she had natural confidence on stage and the voice was generally sound. But the fact that Lionel Richie's only criticism was that Raghu should not lose his determination said it all. Category B
Time of the results! After the US vote, the following candidates were declared safe: Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon, Laci Kaye Booth, Madison VanDenburg, Hardy Wool, Alejandro Aranda and Wade Cota, leaving Walker Burroughs and Alyssa Raghu in danger. Unfortunately, the judges chose not to save any of them, sending Burroughs and Raghu home.
