The Buffalo Bills were one of three teams to qualify for an offensive tackle early in the second round of the NFL draft in 2019.
Jacksonville went from No. 38 to No. 35 to choose Florida, Jawaan Taylor, the Panthers went from No. 47 to No. 37 for Greg Little and the Bills went from No. 40 to No. 38 to take Cody Ford, Oklahoma. It turned out that Buffalo was not the only team attempting to tackle Oklahoma's offensive tackle.
Two sources told NYUP that the Cincinnati Bengals had tried to pass for Ford, but that they would not separate from the necessary choices for the offensive tackle. Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com spoke of the Bengals' interest in a "first-round offensive line player who has slipped" and said the team had tried to go back on the second night of the draft.
Plus, there is another cliché at work here. Sometimes the best trades are the ones you do not do. Give Bengal President Mike Brown and Player Director Duke Tobin the honor. They tried to exchange in the second round one of these offensive line players of the first round who had slipped. But they were also categorical. They coveted one of these guys, but they were holding on to the fourth round. And later, their fifth. They went into the project thinking that the fourth round was where they could make hay. So, Tobin skillfully juggled both options, then changed target, reached agreement with Denver and got that fourth extra place. And sample.
After escaping Ford, Cincinnati was traded from choice 42 and later selected Drew Sample.
Cincinnati showed interest in Ford during the pre-drafting process. The team attended Ford's Professional Day and invited him to visit the first 30 draft.
Buffalo is separated from choices # 40 and # 158 to get Ford.
