Pete Alonso's home races have traveled so far and with such speed, they have produced gasps and printing. His Sunday training sparked another kind of reaction.
Laughs.
The rookie's attack at the top of the left-field fence during the first run allowed Ryan Braun to be soaked in a beer as the ball escaped him, then a fan dropped his drink on the player's left field of the Brewers.
"Hey, Braun, this Bud for you," Alonso joked after the Mets 5-2 win at Citi Field on Sunday.
It happened right next to Budweiser advertising "This Bud's For You" on the left field fence.
"It's a bit funny, I guess," added Alonso. "We have pretty loyal fans, which is great. This is a difficult situation on [Braun]. It's a bit of a strange game.
Alonso was very tough and finished third on his first career treble. Replay review confirmed the referees' initial call that there was no interference from the public and the ball had not crossed the fence. Alonso would mark the first passage of the game on a single by Todd Frazier.
It seems that the fan tried to catch the ball with his full cup of beer and instead he lost his drink and the ball, splashing Braun's hat. Braun smiled at the fan shortly after the play.
"If I could, I would have bought him a beer," Alonso said of the fan. "The Mets need to get a beer of this type or a voucher for a free drink."
Braun was not available to comment after the match, but his starting pitcher, Gio Gonzalez, found the game entertaining.
"It's New York. I like it, "Gonzalez said. "They have a good fan base here. You must always be on your guard. "
