A young Navy recruit dies suddenly, marking the second death since February

A young recruit died last week at the training center at the Navy's training camp in Illinois, marking the second sudden death in recent months, authorities said Sunday.

Rookie Seaman Kelsey Nobles, 18, died Tuesday shortly after she collapsed at the Naval Recruit Training Center in Great Lakes, Ill., The only training camp center in the force. She had two weeks before the end of her studies.

A spokeswoman for the US Navy confirmed the death of the young woman in a statement Sunday afternoon, calling it a "tragic loss".

"The Navy and the Recruit Training Command take the well-being of our recruits and sailors very seriously and investigate the cause of this tragic loss," said General Joseph Pfaff, Navy and Naval Officer. of the training command, in a statement. "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the sailor recruiting Nobles in this tragic time."

Nobles, originally from Alabama, were finishing her latest assessment of her fitness when she collapsed, Pfaff said. She received first aid and was transported to Lake Forest Hospital, just north of Chicago, where she died.

Pfaff refused to say whether Nobles had a pre-existing condition that could have been lifted to join her.

Another rookie, Kierra Evans, 20, of Louisiana, died in the same circumstances at training camp earlier this year.

She collapsed during a physical assessment on February 22 and was rushed to a nearby hospital where she died hours later. She had to graduate the following week.

Evans celebrated the start of his military trip in a Facebook post on January 2nd.

"In such a short time, everything has happened so quickly, yes, I will miss walking in my mother's room to talk or admire how much I love being in her presence," she writes. "But now, I'm separated from the US Navy, and I'm in Chicago for 8 weeks, to all my closest friends who have stood by my side during ALL this, I love you all so much and I'll come back soon."

Pfaff said the two deaths are the subject of an investigation.
