CLEVELAND, Va. – Authorities say five men were rescued from a cave in southwestern Virginia, where they were trapped after heavy rains.

The search and rescue coordinator of the Virginia Emergency Management Department, Billy Chrimes, said Sunday night that the five men had been taken to the hospital after being removed from the cave on Sunday.

Chrimes stated that they were suffering from hypothermia and exhaustion.

According to officials, six men entered Cyclops Cave near Cleveland and planned to camp on Saturday until conditions deteriorated due to heavy rains. The rains also made their exit difficult.

A 22-year-old man managed to go out about 2 am on Sunday and warned the authorities that the others, aged 34 to 59, were still behind, suffering from fatigue and cold.
