Mooresboro, N.C. – Authorities in North Carolina said that a fire at a zinc production plant in Mooresboro had forced some residents to evacuate the area early Monday. The American plant at Zinc Products was still burning around 5 am
The fire was declared Sunday night at the factory, located near the border between North Carolina and South Carolina. Firefighters have mastered the fire in an area of the facility that does not require evacuation, according to the WPSA company's report, affiliated with CBS, on Rutherford County's emergency management.

MPs went door-to-door to warn people to evacuate, burning plant releasing sulfuric acid into the air, and the county says half a mile been evacuated.
Rutherford County Fire Marshal John Greenway told the media that the firefighters had been removed from the scene of the accident while their equipment was being tested for hazardous materials.
He says that it is a precautionary measure until those responsible determine what chemicals they are dealing with.
According to the American Zinc Recycling website, the Mooresboro facility removes and refines the metals to make it "a special high-grade zinc (SGG) and a continuous galvanizing grade (CGG)".
